Review of GAME Plan

For this assignment (week 3) I was to review my GAME Plan and answer questions as to how I was going to 1. help facilitate and inspire learning and creativity and 2. design and develop digital-age learning experience and assessments (both standards from NETS.T 2008).
1. What resources will you need to carry out your plan? I plan to use the Internet, magazines, authentic reading materials , and videos to create lessons which coincide with curriculum and also deal with real-world problems.
2. What additional information do you need? I will need to contact the IT person for our school to make sure video websites such as YouTube and Teacher Tube are available to me. I will need to create a detailed rubric which allows for assessment of the students know or don't know before the project begins, continued observation of my student's learning process through the project, and a reflection of what they learned after the project.
3. What steps have you taken so far? So far I have been trying to pull my thoughts together and getting everything on paper in an organized manner. I have been trying to come up with ideas for projects where I can incorporate these standards.

  1. I really like that you mentioned you plan on using magazines in your classroom. Often people view newspapers as appropriate school reading material, but magazines as "gossip trash". Which ones are you planning on using? I have used both "Science World" and "National Geographic" in my classroom and both are great sources of information in various reading levels. Another question I have for you about this is how are you going to gain access to these? Money is very tight right now and what if you do not get a grant? What else could you use or what other means of gathering materials could you use?

  2. Hi Sarah thanks for the great questions. I am very fortunate to have family in Italy so I will definitely rely on them to send me the materials (magazines or pamphlets etc). The Italian Consulate General in New York has an Education Dept I can always contact if needed. They have a program called IACE (Italian Committee of Education)that is very helpful as well.
    Thanks for the questions,
    Laura

  3. Laura~

TeacherTube is available through my district, but YouTube is not, so maybe you will be in luck on that one. If not...there are a couple of really good video download tools that will change the web video to an mp3 file and email the link to you. I have it at school and not here at home, but I bet you could find them with a search.

Also, does your family in Italy want a house guest for the summer????? :-)

  4. Marie,
I thought the same thing...Do they need a house guest?

    Laura,
It sounds like you have a great jump on your GAME plan. You have a lot of great ideas already in mind to get you started. Your students are very fortunate!

  5. Hi Laura-

If youtube and teachertube are available to you at school, consider yourself lucky! I have come across several situations where I could have used Youtube as an educational tool but it is blocked at my school. I really like how you are incorporating magazines and youtube in your classroom so your students are able to see and learn from real life situations.

  6. I have found that talking to our students about their learning is a powerful tool. I did that last year and my students gave some powerful feedback that shaped the remainder of the year’s progress. They know how they learn best and the directions they want go. If you can incorporate that with the resources you have received from your media specialist, you are on the right track to reach your goals. You are fortunate to have a media specialist who has knowledge and resources to offer. I am constantly searching the Internet and various media sources for current and relevant applications for my content standards. In addition, I am asking my students more about what their ideas are for making the lessons more engaging and more relevant to their lives. Initially, they gave expected answers such as "let us listen to our IPods during tests" or "less homework". The first request is out of my hands and the second is negotiable, depending on how much effort they put into their class work. However, as they have started to understand that I seriously need their input, they are taking more time to consider how to improve our class without making the entire period "free time". Just ask you students, that never fails.

  7. It sounds like we are in about the same place! I also have not taken any steps to carry out my game plan. As I stated in my blog, it is difficult to do so on summer vacation. Howeve,r I am also just trying to pull all of my thoughts together!

Also, I liked the idea that you mentioned using magazines as a resource to carry out your plan! Great suggestion!!

  8. Hi Marie,
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to look into the mp3 download. As far as house guests in Italy??? Well looks like Kim wants to come as well! Maybe we can all go together. :)

  9. Hi Jenn and Chris,
It took a long time for our district to allow teachers to get YouTube (students have filters to their accounts and are not allowed to use the site). I am fortunate and have used some of the videos as part of my lessons this past year.
    thanks for the post,
    Laura

  11. Hi Retta,
I always ask my students for help with technical questions about the internet and software they use and are comfortable with. They are a great source of knowledge.

  12. Hi Megan,
It is sooooo hard to get motivated during the summer! I'm trying to force myself to keep on task or at least not to miss a deadline. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
