Steps towards GAME Plan Goals: week 4
As I think about the 2 goals I set for myself with regards to this assignment I think that they are easily achieved with time and some Internet searching. My first goal of introducing my students to real world situations is as easy as opening up a newspaper or tuning on the TV. The challenge is to try to incorporate the situations into my curriculum. Challenging yes but, with some thought and creativity, it can be done. The second goal of creating assessments is really based on the first goal... What do I want the students to learn from this situation? leads me to: How am I going to assess that they learned? I try to incorporate a "project" with each unit I teach my students, with these two goals o will have to take a different spin on my projects and try to incorporate more current issues.

Laura,
ReplyDeleteI think you are right on track with your plans. The assessments will come with the assignments; I like to use project-based work, which for you, would seem a breeze. I think your students could/would show you a whole technological universe applying the foreign language content. What about posting your standard as the assignment? I've done this! The students choose 1 of a few, only 4 at that time, to investigate, research, and develop a product. Of course, you will facilitate with extra input for the meaning and vocabulary to meet the state's guidelines, but what the heck??
Hi Laura,
ReplyDeleteI would like to share a resource with you in regards to bringing current events into the classroom. A few years ago I started using the CNN Student News feed from iTunes. I already had iTunes downloaded onto my computer at work, so all I had to do was subscribe to the daily podcast. It is a free subscription and the clips are 10-15 minutes long. I was teaching in the block, so I would use this daily. After the clip I would require that my students use a half sheet of paper to respond to either a question from the news clip, or one that I created. Some days I would ask students to read their response aloud, other days I would simply collect them and read through them myself. When I came across an interesting one, I would ask that student if I could read it aloud. This became a positive way for my students to see what is going on in the world around them, and to also write every day. I would give students a 5 point participation grade and the students who were absent could come into my room the following morning to watch the clip and write a response.

I agree that many of our goals could be achieved with time and internet searches, but once school starts, who has the time? I am glad this class is forcing me to not be lazy and to actually complete things I have been meaning to do for a while. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI think your steps are great. I'm looking for something that really helps to establish this atmosphere within the classroom. I know that textbooks are changing, and that based on current trends, that we will not have an actual book within the next 10 years. It would be tremendously helpful to have a substantiated internet program that would lay forth a series of current projects that could lead students towards curricular goals. By this I mean an actual progressive program that evolves daily. Maybe there's a bunch of people in a think tank somewhere that are moving in that direction. Textbooks are written and then finished. I'm looking for something that is written and then modified frequently without me having to constantly create. This task seems very overwhelming given the other responsibilities of teaching.
